EJI Condemns President Ahmadinejad's Statement

October 31, 2005

“Israel should be wiped off the face of the earth” Statement by Mahmoud Ahmadinejad- President of the Islamic Republic of Iran in a seminar in Tehran on October 26, 2005

The recent speech by Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has rightly caused an international outcry. All major world leaders including UN General Secretary, Mr. Kufi Annan and the Palestinian Authority, condemned his statement outright.

Unity for a Democratic and Secular Republic in Iran strongly and unequivocally condemns these abhorrent statements and finds them racist, and in clear violation of international and diplomatic norms as well as Iran’s national and security interests.

We fully recognize the right of the Israeli people to live in peace and security and support and encourage all efforts leading to a peaceful resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the establishment of a Palestinian State side by side and in peaceful co-existence with the State of Israel.

The vast majority of Iranians do not espouse such sentiments and they have explicitly expressed their willingness for normalisation of Iran’s relations with the outside world. Iranian democratic dissidents lined up with mainstream public opinion, has been adamant that they do not wish their government to derail the Israeli-Palestinian peace process.

We demand the government of the Islamic Republic to recant such repulsive and dangerous statements and the world public to accept nothing less.
