Honorable Ambassador Herrera,

On behalf of the United Republicans of Iran (URI), please convey our congratulations to President Hugo Chavez on his reelection as the President of Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.

Democracy begins when the citizens of a nation elect their leaders in a free and fair election, and everyone has the right to vote and be elected without fear and intimidation. URI tries to promote and establish such state of affairs in Iran as well. Although right to vote has currently been granted to everyone, but only a few are allowed to be elected. All the candidates must go through a vetting process and many are disqualified because of their political leanings.

United Republicans of Iran as a political organization of Iranian Secular Republicans is concerned on the way where our country is heading to. We see ourselves as part of the democratic forces within Iran seeking a peaceful transition from theocracy to a democratic and secular system of government.

We hope President Chavez, supports our appeal for free election and democratic change and for promotion of equal right for all citizens particularly between men and women.

Again, we wish his Excellency much success as he leads his people to a prosperous future.

Sincerely,
Mehdi Amini
International Relations Coordinator
